By Dave Whitney, Produce Buyer, Co-op Owner
GreenTree has a new primary produce vendor: The Indianapolis Fruit Company or, as we generally refer to them, “Indy Fruit.” As you might guess, they’re located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our primary vendor is the wholesaler that provides GreenTree Co-op access to all of the different produce items that we are unable to source from our local farmers, especially tropical or semi-tropical items like mangoes, avocados, bananas, grapes, lemons, oranges, and pineapples. We also rely on our primary vendor to source items that may currently be out of season in Michigan, such as Strawberries (which, for us, is any month except June), or lettuces and other fresh greens in the winter. GreenTree works very hard to source as much local produce as possible, but some items just aren’t available. Indy Fruit also has a significantly larger selection of products compared to our last vendor. This variety allows us to provide you with more delicious choices.
From Indianapolis Fruit:
“Since 1947, Indianapolis Fruit has been delivering fresh fruits and vegetables to our valued retail partners throughout the Midwest. Our goal is to produce a Fresh Experience for all members of our supply chain. We are proud to have grown to include a fleet of over 150 refrigerated trucks servicing more than 20 states in the Midwest, three facilities totaling over 250,000 square feet of warehouse space, and more than 500 years of produce experience. Our product mix continues to evolve to meet the dynamic needs of today’s consumers.”
We’re very excited to be aligned with Indy Fruit; since they’ve come on board we’ve been able to increase our vendor delivery schedule from twice a week to three times per week. The increased frequency of deliveries along with shorter gaps between deliveries allows for fresher produce for all of our GreenTree shoppers!
