Staff in the Spotlight: Alyssa Gibson
Alyssa Gibson, Baker
Where are you from?
Can you be from more than one place? I was born in Lansing, MI but grew up in San Diego, CA and Corpus Christi, TX prior to moving to Charlotte, MI.
How did you first find the Co-op?
I was actually shown the Co-op when I was in a composition class at CMU. Our professor had us write an observational paper on the Co-op and then compare it to another food business in Mount Pleasant.
How long have you been working here?
Slightly over a year now. I honestly can’t believe it’s been that long. I guess time does fly when you are having fun.
What is the best part of your job?
Definitely the fact that I get to bake forty hours a week.
Do you like to cook?
I love to cook! I also love to bake. I feel lucky to do a hobby of mine and get paid for it.
Describe your perfect breakfast.
Hmmm… This is going to come off as a feast so I am sorry, but two eggs (sunny side up), hash browns, my grandpa’s biscuits and gravy, waffles (not Belgian waffles though, the ones you can get at Waffle House) with maple syrup, cold brewed coffee from Lestat’s in San Diego, and probably five blood orange Mimosas to wash it all down.
What is your favorite GreenTree product?
Can I throw a plug in and say the awesome cakes we have?! Besides any of the items from the bakery, I am a huge fan of the Califia Cocoa Noir cold brewed coffee and the bulk herbs and spices we carry.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind maybe? It is hard to pick a favorite movie. I would also consider Superstar and I ♥ Huckabees favorites.
What’s your favorite thing to do in Mt. Pleasant?
I like to ride my bike through Milpond and Island Park, but I also enjoy staying up all night in the BFA studio on campus making art.
Tell us something about yourself others might not know.
I drive a stick shift. Most people don’t know that haha.
Where are some of your favorite travel destinations?
This could easily become a long list, but San Diego or California in general, Cedar Point, Colorado, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Detroit, and anything that involves mountains. I will say that Yosemite is easily the most majestic place I have ever been in my entire life and I cannot wait to go back.
What are your hobbies?
Baking and making art. Those two take up most of my time, but that’s because I do them for work and school.
What music is playing in your car, home or head?
Right now I am listening to Laura Stevenson but I have been listening to Turnover’s new album Peripheral Vision a lot.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Dead and in a ditch, just kidding. Hopefully done with graduate school, seeing the world, have some sense of stability as an artist whether I am selling work, doing residencies, or teaching. Honestly, as long as I am traveling, have great people in my life, and still making art, I will be happy with wherever I am at.
